  5.      We can ask ourselves later why the fanatic specialism of 
  6. the Phoenicians, which hacked the alphabet out of the 
  7. hieroglyphic culture, did not release any further intellectual or 
  8. artistic activity in them. Meantime, it is relevant to note that 
  9. Cicero, the encyclopedic synthesizer of the Roman world, when 
  10. surveying the Greek world, reproves Socrates for having been 
  11. the first to make a split between mind and heart. The pre-
  12. Socratics were still mainly in a nonliterate culture. Socrates 
  13. stood on the border between that oral world and the visual and 
  14. literate culture. But he wrote nothing. The Middle Ages regarded 
  15. Plato as the mere scribe or amanuensis of Socrates. And 
  16. Aquinas considered that neither Socrates nor Our Lord
